Breeding for the "hidden half": challenges and new opportunities

Root traits of plants are usually overlooked by breeding compared to above-ground traits like yield and disease resistance despite they play a critical role in water and nutrient uptake, anchorage, and plant-microbiome interactions. Especially under challenging environmental conditions such as limitations in the availability of soil nutrients and soil water, an efficient root system is of major importance. However, considering root traits in the breeding process is difficult as they are underground, making phenotyping labor-intensive and time-consuming, can vary significantly depending on soil type and other environmental factors, and are often controlled by complex genetics. Advanced imaging techniques and new insights in genomics and transcriptomics may help to study root systems during their development and without disturbing the soil, and to identifying genes associated with desirable root traits.

We welcome contributions considering any multiomics approach to study root development, root system architecture, root-microbiome interactions, nutrient-efficiency etc.

Moreover, we cordially invite you to submit also ‘free topic’ contributions related to recent research findings which are of value to disseminate to the plant breeding community.

  • 75 years in the service of plant breeding - From chi-square to genomic selection

In 2024, the annual conference of Saatgut Austria celebrates its 75 anniversary. Starting in 1950 in Vienna with only a few presentations and participants, the conference moved already in 1951 to the Ennstal – first to Admont and later to Gumpenstein – and welcomed in 1952 its first foreign participant from Bavaria. A real boost of international participants started after 1955 when the Austrian State Treaty was signed and 17 years of occupation by foreign troops ended. Since then, the conference is a hub for the transfer of knowledge in all fields of plant breeding - from statistical analysis of field experiments to the application of molecular tools – to commercial plant breeders, seed producers, experts at public authorities and scientists at universities and research institutions in Central Europe.
